“The Silent Patient” Book Review

  • Title: The Silent Patient
  • Author: Alex Michaelides
  • Genre: Psychological Thriller, Suspense
  • Published: February 5, 2019

The Silent Patient begins with the narrative of Alicia Benson, a renowned artist who lives her dreams as a painter, turning her passion for art into something million-dollar-wealthy. Not to mention her loving husband, a well-known fashion photographer, Gabriel.

The “Silent Patient” title is reflected in this part as Alicia becomes silent–not a single word out of her mouth–following his husband’s tragic demise. The tragedy happened six years ago.

No signs of intruders or evidence could lead to the actual perpetrator of the murder. The only clue the police found lay with Alicia, who was found alone in the same room, in the pitch-black darkness, standing immobilized with a frightened look.

Heightening the terror, the silhouette of a man appeared in the darkness, slumped weakly in a chair with wire binding his wrists and ankles, a bloody mess. The gruesome scene was evident not only on his body but also on the wall behind him, with fragments of skull scattered around.

Given such a crime scene, it’s understandable that rumors are circulating–pointing to the painter Goddess Alicia becoming the infamous murderer.

At this point, you realize that you will step into Theo Faber’s shoes, a forensic psychologist who is deeply intrigued by Alicia’s case. He is determined not to just uncover the mystery behind her husband’s murder, but also to understand her unbroken silence. Speaking of dedication, he even gave up his secure and promising job to transfer to a psychiatric hospital treating Alicia.

Yes, for years, Alicia has been reluctant to speak or communicate in any way, leading experts to believe she is mentally disturbed and in need of treatment in a mental institution. The mystery remains unsolved until then, leaving everyone puzzled with the assumption that Alicia was that crazy painter-wife who killed her beloved husband.

But, why? What happened? Even during the interview, Alicia neither denied nor confessed anything nor offered any clues.

In exploring Alicia’s loudest silence, Theo uncovers layers of psychological depth, trauma, and secrets, showing that this is far from a typical homicide mystery.
